Community First! Village
Community First! Village is a 27-acre master planned community that provides affordable, permanent housing and a supportive community for the disabled, chronically homeless in Central Texas. A development of Mobile Loaves & Fishes, this transformative residential program exists to love and serve our neighbors who have been living on the streets, while also empowering the surrounding community into a lifestyle of service with the homeless.
ACHE South chose Community First! Village for our 2017 philanthropy project because of their unique approach to continuing education for their residents, the larger Austin community, and beyond.
The Community Art House, Community Forge and Woodworking, Genesis Gardens, and art workshops for the Austin Community programs provide training for artists and artisans through a series of workshops, each month taught by Austin-area professionals. These workshops are open to the public and free to residents of the Community, who can apply their new skills to earning a dignified living income. These programs are empowering, entrepreneurial, and educational. Vital to the Village’s mission is the way their residents can educate visitors to the community, both in formal and informal settings. The Community Inn hosts individuals in groups who come to learn alongside Community members, and the Outreach and Education team works to overturn stereotypes and prejudices associated with formerly homeless populations. Our second keynote speaker comes from Community First! Village: Bethany Hebbard, Community Corps Director. In addition to describing the Community’s internal adult education programs, she’ll talk about another continuing education initiative, the quarterly Symposiums the Village hosts for individuals and groups who want to replicate Community-First! modeled villages in cities around the country and around the world.
